Daily care & preventative maintenance
With a proper cleaning and maintenance routine, your area rug can look beautiful as beautiful as when you bought it for many years to come.
As part of your cleaning routine, you should vacuum at least once weekly to pick up loose dirt and debris. If not vacuumed up, these dirt particles can get ground into your rug's fibers by normal foot traffic, damaging them & dulling your rug’s appearance over time.
When cleaning shag rugs, you’ll want to take a slightly different approach. Keep in mind that these rugs have longer, cable-like yarns that tend to get wrapped around vacuum beater bars. You can avoid this by disconnecting the beater bar, instructions for which should be available in your vacuum's owner manual. Set your vacuum to the lowest height setting for the best suction results.
Dealing with common spills & stains
Your area rug will likely fall victim to the occasional spill or stain, especially if you have young kids or active pets. If this happens, don't panic! You should first assess the mess, and if the spill is water-based you should be able to blot up most of the liquid with a clean, dry cloth. Water-based spills include those from juice or pet accidents.
For more stubborn stains from oil-based materials, you'll want to consult with your manufacturer's guidelines. You can also consult our spill removal guide in the Additional Resources below.
